Why Does My Cat Howl
There is nothing quite so heart stopping or blood curdling as the late night sound of cats howling. Straight out of a horror movies, it never wears thin. You can be sitting comfortable watching a film and then the wail of the banshees starts up.
Your left paralyzed, waiting for something terrible to happen, usually nothing does but that single wail is enough to put you on edge for a while. Especially if it is your cat that is howling.
There are several theories or reasons as to why cats howl. Some of the main ones are:
While in heat, a cat will howl to let a potential mate know they are in the vicinity and primed for action as so to speak.
Cats will howl at each other as a way of establishing territory, the stand off can last quite a while as anyone who has ever silently watched two opposing cats face each other. Nothing seems to happen but I'm guessing that in the cat world, a whole myriad of signals and threats are being exchanged. It can be a fascinating experience, just don't let them catch you watching or the spell will be broken.
I'm guessing another major reason for why your cat is howling would be none other than wanting attention. Maybe it is shut outside the bedroom door or fancies a bite to eat, no doubt you have experienced this at one time or another, so it is no suprise really, as cats can be very demanding creatures when they feel like it.
